Delicious Biltong made in County Durham

Delicious Biltong made in County Durham

My batch of Biltong samples arrived this morning. Biltong for anyone unfamiliar with this South African delicacy, is a form of air dried, cured meat.

It was something Karen had brought back from a visit to a childhood friend of hers back in the early 2000s. For someone who will try anything once, I found the dried meat really tasty especially with an ice-cold beer. I have since come across a very dry version of Biltong that tasted like leather at the local supermarket. delicious biltong Durham

My fresh arrival of delicious Biltong from Durham
My fresh arrival of Biltong

Just a week ago, David Wigham, a guy I met just about every morning at the local gym in the mid 2000s, got in touch to let me know that he had started producing Biltong in of all places, Peterlee (County Durham).

He promised to send me a few samples to try. The packaging is impressive. The Biltong comes in resealable foil bags to keep the freshness. It has a few weeks’ shelf life and, once it is open, must be consumed within 48 hours.

Great packaging. Resealable bags and clear information

I can vouch that the product is delicious. The Biltong is just as tasty as the one Karen brought me back from South Africa all those years ago.
Meaty, slightly chewy and moist it comes in a variety of flavours. I will try using it in various dishes and hopefully come up with a couple of decent recipes.
I am lucky that Jonny Biltong is just up the road. Once I am ready for more Biltong, I shall pop up to Peterlee for more. But for anyone who is a long way from County Durham, here is a link for the order line:
